The Student Hotel, the Dutch group that pioneered a hybrid model of high-quality hospitality has selected Berlin to continue its European expansion.

Thursday, September 29, 2016 — Adding to its twelve-strong portfolio of properties, The Student Hotel will open its first German location in the heart of global youth capital Berlin in partnership with the European Student Housing Fund. The 17,000-square meter space is located on Alexanderstraße, in the immediate vicinity of the iconic Alexanderplatz, an area known as the Alexanderquartier.  The project will be developed and operated in a joint venture with Triton Development GmbH, the investment adviser to the European Student Housing Fund. The Student Hotel Berlin will bring 456 new rooms to serve the thriving international student and tourist community.

Since the German reunification, the Alexanderplatz area has undergone a gradual process of change with many of the surrounding buildings being renovated. The district has become a modern transit junction and hotspot for development in Berlin’s Mitte district.

Opening in 2019 The Student Hotel Berlin will add to the mixed-use character of the area. Contemporary architecture will frame the hotel and create a mix of student rooms, hotel rooms and co-living studios. The ground floor will be accessible to the public with study areas, meeting rooms, a co-working space for start-ups, games room, a gym and a garage for a 400+ bicycle fleet.

Charlie MacGregor, the company’s CEO and founder says: “The Student Hotel Berlin will connect students and start-ups, freelancers and the local neighbourhood. We are happy to start our German adventure in Berlin, a city which, like The Student Hotel, has been a shelter for a young and international community.”

The Student Hotel Group, which currently operates over 3000 rooms in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Groningen, Barcelona and Paris, will open shortly in Eindhoven, Maastricht, Florence and Bologna aiming to reach 15,000 rooms by 2020 through acquisitions and development sin Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

The European Student Housing Fund operates across Northern Europe and has over 3600 rooms in development which will be operated by Triton under its BaseCamp Student brand. Andreas Junius, MD of Triton Developemt GmbH, adds: “We are a community-focused developer and operator. The synergies on this project entirely reflect our philosophy. Usually due to planning or site constraints there are compromises – not here. Near everything, far from ordinary that’s BaseCamp and that’s this project. We are pleased to bring The Student Hotel into the project and look forward to many years of cooperation and operating a hospitality space for students and young visitors in this most vibrant city for young people in Europe”.

Berlin University City

Well known for its nightlife, cultural landmarks and start-up scene Berlin is also one of the largest university cities in Europe. A total of 165,000 students attend as many as 31 universities and post-graduate academies, including the top universities Humboldt Universität, Freie Universität and Technische Universität. The number of international students is growing fast, generating demand for a student accommodation concept not existent in Germany so far.

German market posed to grow

The Student Hotel is working to bring its new concept to university cities across Germany and connect them to their European network. It is actively seeking opportunities in Hamburg, Munich, Bremen, Frankfurt and Cologne. DAAD – the German Academic Exchange Service - recently reported record numbers of international students coming to Germany with many looking to find jobs and start a business. The Student Hotel seeks to support those cities with a new chapter for co-living where leisure and business travelers and students share spaces, connect and inspire each other.
